Empty Bowls is a community project, cosponsored by the Aberdeen Area Arts Council, the Aberdeen Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department and the Yelduz Shrine Center that combines the creative arts and education to work on a social problem -- hunger. Bowls are created by local community people, students and artists who then host a simple meal of soup and bread. Guests attending the meal make a suggested $20 donation, choose a bowl to have soup in, then take the bowl home as a reminder of the event and of the fact that hunger exists, even here in Aberdeen. All funds support area programs, including the Salvation Army, Safe Harbor, and other food banks and local organizations that address hunger issues through direct service and education/awareness programs.
